WHAT YOU'LL SEE

More than just a pass or fail.

Our free check doesn't just show you the raw MOT record — we analyse patterns across every test, chart mileage progression, and flag what matters with a traffic-light system you can read at a glance.

Full MOT test history

Every pass, fail, and advisory — verbatim DVSA wording, nothing paraphrased.

Mileage progression

Visual chart over time with automatic anomaly detection — spot rollbacks and unusual jumps instantly.

Pattern analysis

Recurring issues across multiple tests — a single advisory is normal; the same one year after year is a signal.

Traffic-light flagging

Red for safety-critical, amber for monitor, green for cosmetic. Skim it in seconds, no mechanic required.

Example output — your report will show your car's actual data.

HOW WE FLAG WHAT MATTERS

A traffic-light read of every advisory.

Most checkers dump raw DVSA notes and call it a day. We classify every line so you can decide in seconds whether it's something to fix, watch, or ignore.

Red — safety critical

Items that affect roadworthiness today, or recurring failures with no record of repair. Walk-away or negotiate-hard territory.

Structural corrosionBrake performance failureTyre below legal limit

Amber — worth monitoring

Same advisory across two or more years, components nearing wear limits, or anything we’d want a mechanic to verify before purchase.

Brake pad <50% (2× years)Slight oil leak persistentSuspension bush deteriorating

Green — cosmetic or one-off

Single advisories that were addressed, minor cosmetic notes, or anything that doesn’t pattern across the vehicle’s history.

An MOT certificate tells you a car passed on a particular day. It doesn't tell you what the examiner was concerned about, what's been flagged year after year, or whether the mileage adds up. That's where pattern analysis comes in.

Advisories are not fails. Most cars pick up a few — that's perfectly normal. What matters is whether the same issue keeps appearing across multiple tests. Recurring brake advisories, persistent corrosion warnings, or exhaust problems that never quite get fixed: these are the signals that raw data alone won't surface.

Our checker runs every advisory through a traffic-light system. Red flags safety-critical items like brake wear or structural corrosion. Amber highlights things worth monitoring. Green means minor or cosmetic — not something to worry about. You get a clear read in seconds, without needing to be a mechanic.

We also chart mileage progression across every MOT. Unusual jumps or decreases can indicate a discrepancy worth investigating before you buy. Combined with the average miles per year, you'll know whether a car has been driven gently or hard.

FAQ

Common questions.

Where does this data come from?
All MOT data is pulled directly from the official DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) MOT history API. It’s the same source gov.uk uses for its public check-MOT-history service — verbatim, not paraphrased. We layer pattern analysis and a traffic-light read on top, but the underlying records are unmodified.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no card, no email required. We offer paid services (full Vehicle History Check, MOT Preparation Reviews, car-sourcing consultancy) but the MOT history check itself will always be free.
Can I check a car I don’t own?
Absolutely — that’s what most people use it for. MOT history is public information in the UK. If you’re considering buying a used car, running the reg through here before you view it is a smart five-second sanity check.
What’s the difference between an advisory and a fail?
A fail means the car didn’t pass the MOT — it has a defect that must be fixed before it can legally be driven. An advisory is a note from the examiner about something that isn’t a fail yet but may become one. Think of advisories as early warnings: a single one is normal, but the same advisory across multiple years is a signal that something’s being ignored.
Why are some advisories serious and others minor?
We classify advisories by recurrence and category. Safety-critical components (brakes, tyres, structure, steering) flagged repeatedly across years get red. Wear-prone items approaching limits get amber. One-off cosmetic notes get green. The DVSA wording stays as-is — our flagging is an overlay you can ignore if you’d rather read raw notes.
What if my MOT shows nothing?
Either the car is too new to have had an MOT (under 3 years old), the registration is misspelled, or it’s not a UK vehicle. Double-check the reg, and remember the first MOT is due on the third anniversary of first registration.
APPROACHING MOT?

Want to know exactly what to fix before the test?

Our MOT Preparation Checklist & Advisory Review (£49) reviews your vehicle's MOT history and current advisories, flags what's likely to fail next time, and gives you a plain-English checklist of what to sort first.
